A Big Jump From Class 10

In Class 11 you choose your subjects for the first time. Most schools group them as Science, Commerce and Humanities. Science students choose Maths, Biology, or both.

The Class 11 exam is set by your own school, following CBSE rules. It is not a board exam. But the work is much harder than Class 10, and JEE, NEET and CUET all ask questions from Class 11.

We last checked this page in October 2026. Exam rules can change. Read the official notice on cbseacademic.nic.in before you apply.

How to prepare

Four Habits for the Class 11 Year

There is no board exam in Class 11, so many students slow down. These four habits keep the year on pace.

01

Choose the stream for a reason

Pick it for the course you want later, and for the subjects you can work at. Do not pick it because a friend did.

02

Do not wait for Class 12

Class 12 chapters are built on Class 11. A weak Class 11 makes the board year much harder.

03

Solve problems from week one

Physics and Maths in Class 11 are learnt by solving. Reading the chapter is only the start.

04

Test yourself every week

Without a board exam, nobody checks you. A weekly written test shows the gaps early.

CBSE Class 11 questions

Questions Students Ask About CBSE Class 11

Is CBSE Class 11 a board exam?

No. The Class 11 exam is held and marked by your own school. The CBSE board exam is in Class 12. But Class 11 chapters are asked in JEE, NEET and CUET.

Which stream should I choose after Class 10?

Choose by the course you want. Engineering needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Medicine needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Commerce leads to business, banking and accounts. Humanities suits law, civil services and teaching. Ask a teacher who knows your marks and your interests.

Should I take PCM, PCB or both?

Take Maths for engineering and Biology for medicine. Taking both keeps both doors open, but it is a heavy load. Take both only if you are strong in each and cannot yet decide.

Is Class 11 harder than Class 10?

Yes, much harder. The chapters are longer and the questions need more steps. Many students who scored well in Class 10 struggle in the first months. Steady weekly work fixes this.

Can I change my stream after Class 11?

That depends on your school and on CBSE rules for that year. Ask your school early. It is easier to choose well at the start.
