What CTET Is For
CTET is the Central Teacher Eligibility Test. It is held by CBSE. Passing it does not give you a job. It makes you eligible to apply for teaching jobs, such as the BPSC Teacher exam.
There are two papers. Paper 1 is for those who want to teach Classes 1 to 5. Paper 2 is for Classes 6 to 8. You can sit one or both.
We last checked this page in October 2026. Exam rules can change. Read the official notice on ctet.nic.in before you apply.

How to prepare
Four Steps for CTET
There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so attempt every question.
Start with pedagogy
Child development and pedagogy runs through every section. It is new to most candidates, so begin there.
Study from NCERT school books
Maths, Science, Social Studies and Environmental Studies are asked at school level.
Solve past CTET papers
The same kinds of question come back each session. Solve the papers of the last few sessions with a clock.
Attempt everything
With no negative marking, never leave a question blank. Manage time so you reach the end.
CTET questions
Questions Candidates Ask About CTET
What is the qualifying mark for CTET?
A general category candidate needs 60%, which is 90 marks out of 150. SC, ST, OBC and disabled candidates need 55%, which is 82 marks. This applies to each paper on its own.
Is there negative marking in CTET?
No. Each right answer gives one mark, and nothing is taken away for a wrong answer. So you should attempt every question.
How long is the CTET certificate valid?
For life. It used to be valid for seven years. It is now valid for the lifetime of the candidate.
What is the difference between CTET and STET?
CTET is a central test, for teaching Classes 1 to 8. The Bihar STET is a state test, for teaching Classes 9 to 12 in Bihar. Both are eligibility tests, not job exams.
Does passing CTET give me a teaching job?
No. CTET only makes you eligible. You must then apply for a recruitment exam, such as the BPSC Teacher exam, and be selected there.
